House Builders Putting Quantity Ahead of Quality

It has been well documented of late that house builders have been accused of emphasizing a focus more on quantity rather than quality. Upon recent surveys that MDR Home Inspections have conducted, it is clear to see that the number of new home snagging defects is on the rise, which is creating an un-easy atmosphere between the purchaser and the developer and a growing number of complaints from customers.
A recent survey by the Home Builders Federation discloses 98 per cent of customers have reported new home snagging defects to their homes from moving in a year ago, a figure up some 93 per cent. But why is this trend worsening? Having recently been to some National House Builders Sites, the feedback we have been receiving is frightening. It has become clear some companies now are completing purchasers without doing an official Home demonstration until they have moved in, or even conducting a home demonstration without giving the customer the opportunity to complete new home snagging before moving in.

Recent surveys have showed worsening trends within the construction sector where customers have reported 16 or more problems to their builder, up from 22 per cent a year ago. It has also been revealed by the Times Newspaper that Bovis Homes has had its rating cut from three to two stars, the lowest of any housebuilder surveyed and below the average four stars. This comes after finding out that Bovis offered customers £3000 each to complete on unfinished homes in a failed attempt to meet the companies year end results. Since then, the company has offset £7 Million to re-address this. However, this could also be said for other national developers who are struggling to meet their deadlines.
Paula Higgins, Chief Executive of the Home Owners Alliance said; " This data is worrying on a number of levels, it shows that the standard of house building is getting worse as developers focus on quantity not quality, with problems more frequent and more severe than in recent Past ".

The Questions why a lack of new build snagging is being completed by the developers is only one they can answer, but ultimately is being driven by the shareholders and 'Fat cats ' who control these large corporations. Once the money is in the bank account, in the words of Barack Obama, you will be at the back of the queue. Our advise, seek some professional support and put the onus back on the housebuilder to meet your expectation. Get an Independent snagging company to complete your new build snagging list. After all, its the biggest single investment most people will make in their lives.
